After I got Rose back down to sleep, Ryker offered to order another pizza, but I cited exhaustion. Even though his regret radiated off his muscled form, he didn’t push me, and I loved him more for it.

It would have been too easy to fall into his arms again, to let myself be carried away by his mouth and manhood.

But Riley’s untimely arrival had reminded me of why we needed to stay apart in the first place. None of us were safe. The pack was splitting, and I was the cause of it. Things were worse now than ever.

“Should I come by the gym tomorrow? I don’t have anything going on this weekend.”

We stood at the doorway, a respectful distance apart, and I averted my eyes, worried he would suck me back in with a single glance.

“No, I’m taking the weekend off. I want some mother-daughter time.”

“Sounds fun. I wish I could join.”

I winked at him and held the door open. “I might borrow you next week, though. I don’t think Ali’s going to be able to watch Rose anymore, and I’m kind of eager to have her back at the gym with me.”

“Anytime.”

I managed a smile and again lowered my eyes. “Goodnight. Thanks for keeping me company.”

He paused and eyed me. I knew that look. He was going to ask me about Rose’s father again.

“Who is he, Molly?”

I tried to look away, but he touched my chin and forced me to meet his eyes.

“I think I’ve earned the right to know.”

Swallowing, I nodded. “You did—you do have every right to know,” I conceded. “But he’s…he’s not an issue anymore.”

Relief colored his face, and I waited for him to press me for more details.

“Good. For me.”

He chuckled and headed out the door. Calling him back was on the tip of my tongue, a tongue I almost swallowed to stop myself.

Riley remained parked at the curb, his grin evident even from where I stood. Sighing, I retreated into the house and closed the door, locking it behind me.

The house was heavier with Ryker gone. Why hadn’t I let him stay?

When are these damned hormones going to stop kicking my ass? I growled silently, heading up the stairs to check on Rose.

She remained soundly asleep, and I peered at her innocent, slumbering face, lingering over the bassinet. Only two months old, and she was already becoming a little person. The blonde tufts of hair had become golden curls, circling her plump cheeks. She still had that alien look to her, as newborns did, but there was a definition about her that hadn’t been there before.

I stroked her small forehead softly before making my way to my bedroom. I changed out of my joggers, tossing the sports bra into the laundry, and located a pair of flannel pajamas.

I hoped sleep would come as easily for me as it had for Rose.
